her inside.
She sat down and looked all around. “Are you saying you don’t feel that?”
“What?” He knew she looked serious, but he didn’t know.
“There is someone watching us. I can feel it.”
He could tell that she was serious, so he tried to make sure she knew he was paying attention to what she was talking about even though he’d scanned the area when he’d come out like he always did and didn’t see anything out of order.
They sat in the car for a few minutes and he held her hand while he did a slow scan of the area. He was feeling a little like someone could be watching them, but in all honesty he was just getting freaked out by Natalie.
“I will make sure that I keep a closer eye on things, but right now I don’t see anything.” He knew he sounded like he was trying to pacify her, and that was probably because he was. She was so frightened he just wanted to make sure she was okay. She nodded at his words, and they took off for his place.
Pulling out onto the road he watched for cars that were around and could start following him but nothing happened. After a few minutes and some miles away from the restaurant, Natalie seemed to settle down a little.
“You think I’m crazy, don’t you?” She asked as she looked out the window. He couldn’t see her face, but he could imagine it was bright pink with embarrassment.
“No. I think you feel like someone is watching you.”
“Someone was watching us.”
“Do you think they saw us in the restaurant? You don’t have to worry about that. Enchanted Evening has an iron clad agreement to protect your privacy and what you do in there. No one is going to know what happened on our date under the stars.”
“I wasn’t worried about that. I just wonder why someone is watching us in the first place.” She looked over at him, and although she looked slightly more comfortable, he could tell she didn’t think he believed her. “It’s not ridiculous that someone could be following us. I admit I have been concerned about the criminal element of your job and fear that somehow it will creep into my life.”
He could only shrug. That fear was something he understood. No matter how much he thought it was a bit irrational, he was glad that she was thinking about it. Most people just thought about the money and not the other baggage that went with it.
She giggled and he wondered if she’d finally cracked.
“I’m just being paranoid. Don’t mind me. I’m going to try to think rationally and calm myself down before I get all worked up.”
“Just because I didn’t see anything this time, it doesn’t mean you should let your guard down. This life can make you crazy… I’ve seen it happen. There is a need to be aware of your surroundings and what’s going on with the people near you, so although I don’t want you terrified, a small amount of fear wouldn’t hurt.”
CHAPTER FIVE
Natalie was tired.
She thought about what Jack had said before he left for his 24 hour shift that he’d told her was coming up, but she hated that it was now.
“I’ve got a good friend coming to take you to work in the morning and pick you up from work.”
“I can get around by myself. I promise. You are looking at a fully grown woman.”
He growled in her ear, and that sexy sound ended in a chuckle. “I am quite aware of that fact, but thanks for letting me know. I just want to make sure you’re safe. Loud Mouth Billy will be here at six, so make sure you’re ready. He thinks you’re my cousin, so don’t say anything to make him think otherwise. We call him Loud Mouth for short.”
“Right because Loud Mouth is so much easier than saying Billy.”
Jack looked at her with an expression that said he didn’t really appreciate the jokes and he’d been a bit uptight for the last week, so he probably wouldn’t have minded her changing her tune
