those among my people.â
âIâve had a lot of experience,â Abbey said.
âIâll gather some firewood, and you look through these supplies and see if you can find something good to cook.â He tied the horses, while Abbey prowled through the large saddlebags. By the time Lothar had a fire going, she could say, âWeâre going to have a fine supper. Iâll show you what a good cook I am.â
âGood,â he said. âAnd I brought a small tent for you to sleep in. Iâll make you a bed of pine boughs. It wonât be as good as the apartments in the palace, but youâll have some privacy.â
As Abbey began to fry meat in a small pan, she watched him remove from a saddlebag a dark blue tent that seemed to be made of fine silk. He cut poles and stakes with a sharp knife, and she was delighted when he turned and waved at the small shelter.
âItâs beautiful,â she said. âI wouldnât mind having a dress made out of that material.â
âIts color would go with your eyes.â Lothar smiled. He came over and sat down. âIs supper about ready?â
âYes. Iâve done the best I could.â She put the meat and bread before him. He had brought along two delightful, collapsible silver cups. She opened them, admired them, and filled them with sparkling spring water. âNo Dr Pepper tonight, Iâm afraid.â
âDoctor who?â Lothar asked in surprise. âWe donât have a doctor here.â
âOh, thatâs just the name of a drink we used to have back where I lived.â
Abbey found the tender meat to be very good. Lothar approved of it too. Then she opened a package and said, âI donât know who made these, but theyâre delicious.âThey were small cakes, sweet and mouth-watering. âWhatâs in them?â
âHoney, I think. Iâm no cook. Iâm mostly an eater.â
The two of them finished eating, then sat back and watched the fire as it crackled merrily.
âTell me more about the Kingdom of the Underworld,â she said.
Apparently nothing could have pleased Lothar more. For an hour he talked about his home. âYou would never know, by walking over the ground, what is underneath,â he said. âThere are compartments filled with gold and precious metals. There are huge caverns where we store food of all kindsâmostly wild grain. We have our own mill by an underground river. Youâll like the underground river. It goes to a rocky channel, and the stones are so bright theyâre like lamps lit up. They reflect on the water. Iâll take you for a boat ride when we get there.â
âAnd you make all the things you need to live underground?â
âOh, most everything.â Lothar shrugged. âItâs like other kingdoms in some ways.â
âHowâs that, Lothar?â
âWell, we have different classes of people.â He went on to describe the structure of the Underworld. âAt the top, of course, is the Royal Family, which is now the empress and myself. Then we have our nobles. Youâll be meeting all of them. The young nobles will all fall in love with you and want to marry you.â
He laughed at her blush. âI didnât know girls knew how to blush. Youâll be the belle of the ball. I can see you now, wearing a beautiful new red dress with diamonds and a crown on your head and boots made out of finely tanned moleskin and ruby rings on your fingers and an amethyst necklace â¦â
He went on and on, and Abbey enjoyed it hugely.
âI wish we were there,â she said excitedly. âIâm so anxious to meet the empress and all the nobles. But there are other people who do the work, arenât there?â
âOh, yes. We have our mercantile classâthat is, people who work for a living. They make things, buy things, sell thingsâI donât know most of them too
