immediately switched from annoyed to worried. âEverything okay?â
âSure,â I responded automatically.
âReally? Youâve been acting kind ofâI donât know. Just not yourself. I noticed earlier, too.â
I was touched that she seemed so concerned. Not sure what to say, I toyed with the key-shaped necklace, which I hadnât taken off since it had arrived.
Meganâs gaze followed my hand. âOoh, cool pendant!â she said. âWhereâd you get it?â
I hesitated, wanting to tell her the truth. Maybe not the whole truthâI had no interest in spending my twelfth birthday in the loony bin. But that didnât mean I couldnât tell her the non-loony parts, right?
âActually, itâs a long story.â I glanced around to make sure nobody was close enough to hear us. âBut you have to swear not to tell anyone, okay? Like, not even Lav or the others.â
âCross my heart,â she said, tracing a manicured finger in a big X across the front of her cute pastel-striped shirt.
I took a deep breath. âItâs about myâmy dad.â
âYour dad?â Megan looked confused.
âHe died when I was a baby,â I said. âI donât remember him at all.â
She leaned forward, looking stricken. âOh, Cass! I had no idea. Iâm sorry.â
âThanks.â I shrugged. âThe thing is, my mom is really weird about him. She wonât tell us anything, and Cait and I have always wanted to know more.â
âOf course you do!â She nodded emphatically. âYou must be dying of curiosity. Why wonât she talk about him?â
âI donât know. And I canât really even ask.â I grimaced, picking at a peeling bit of paint on the edge of the table. âIf you knew my mom, youâd know she gets mad if you ask too many questions. And trust me, you donât want to get her mad if you can help it.â
âOh.â Megan looked thoughtful for a second. âDo you have any other relatives you could ask?â
âNot really.â I shrugged. âI mean, Iâve got plenty of family on my momâs side. But they wonât cross her. Plus Iâm not sure how much any of them even know, since Mom got married when she was stationed overseas.â I took a deep breath. âBut actually, the reason Iâm thinking about all this now is because our grandmotherâmy dadâs momâsent Cait and me a package with this necklace and a letter, too. It came yesterday. Until then, we didnât even know she existed.â
âReally?â Megan exclaimed. âWhatâd the letter say?â
âGood question.â I slumped in my seat. âMom grabbed it before we could read more than, like, the first few lines.â
âWhoa.â Megan fell silent for a moment. âI donât know what to say. I mean, itâs hard for me to imagine not knowing everything about my family.â Her mouth twisted into a half smile. âSometimes it feels like itâs basically Auraâs town history!â
I chuckled. âYeah, I can see how that could be a problem, too.â
She smiled. âSo I donât know how much help I can be. But still, Iâm here for you, Cassie, if you need to talk or whatever.â
âThanks.â Megan was being so cool that I was half tempted to share the rest of my family secret.
But only half. She might be understanding, but it was asking a lot to expect her to believe I could predict the future. I hardly believed it myself.
So instead, I grabbed her hand and squeezed it. But as soon as I touched her, my vision went all fuzzy, and Meganâs sympathetic face faded into the background.
Overlaid on top of it was a much brighter, more vivid Megan. But this Megan wasnât sitting in the library. She was pushing open a big wooden gate into a grassy yard dotted with trees, carrying a small bag with the
