be a lot
more information as time moves on. It gets more detailed,”
I answered. “This is going to take forever.”
“My offer to help read still stands,” Nick reminded me.
I nodded. “I think the sauce is ready.”
We ate dinner in front of the TV and went to bed right
after the movie. My eyes were tired from all the reading
and I couldn’t keep them open any longer.
~Chapter Three~
The end of the school year was flying by. I couldn’t
work on Nonna’s book very much because I had a ten page
research paper due by the end of the week and had
procrastinated too long. It was the final assignment of the
year for my European history class.
“What’s your topic anyway?” Nick asked one night. He
sat beside me watching TV as I typed away on my laptop.
“The witch hunts of early modern Europe,” I answered.
“Haha,” he laughed out loud.
I looked up at him. “What? I thought it would be easyish,” I shrugged.
“Don’t you think you have an unfair advantage?”
“No, it’s not like I was there or anything. I still have to
research it,” I answered.
“Okay, I guess you’re right. You should include the
story of how Adelina turned Henri over to the church,” he
joked.
I just rolled my eyes at him. “Yeah, that’d go over well.
My teacher would think I was crazy.”
“You don’t have to mention that she was a were and he
was an actual witch. But it might be cool to claim that they
were in your family line or something so you know their
personal story,” he said.
“Actually, that’s not a bad idea,” I mused. “It would add
something cool to the paper. Not so boring.”
“How much do you have left? Isn’t it due in a couple
days?”
“Yeah, Friday. It’s almost done. I still have like three
more pages, but I’ll get it done in time,” I assured him. I
decided to be done for the night. Between reading the
family book and research on my laptop, my eyes were
seriously drying out and I had to use eyedrops every night.
“Don’t you have any final stuff?” I asked.
“I didn’t take any AP classes, love. I don’t have a death
wish like you. I just have exams.”
“You suck,” I frowned. “And I don’t have a death wish.
I just wanted to get some college credits out of the way. By
the way, are you going to the university in the fall?” We
hadn’t talked about our future school plans yet. For over a
month we just lived every moment to its fullest. I was still
worried that at any moment, Nick would be taken away
from me. It was silly, but I couldn’t shake the feeling.
“Well, I hadn’t planned on it. Babbo wants me to come
work at the restaurant full-time, so I never really thought
about it. But… I guess you want to?”
“I think I do. I mean, I’ve been accepted. I was
planning on it, but…” I started.
“But, what? You should go. You’re too much of a
smarty pants not to,” he grinned.
“Does it sound extremely lame that I don’t want to
spend time away from you?” I asked.
“Oh, Sofia,” Nick said as he pulled me to him. He
wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head.
“I don’t like to be apart from you either. But I want you to
live the life you wanted before we found each other. Just
include me in your future plans.”
“Always,” I mumbled into his chest.
“But please don’t meet some hot college guy and run
away with him.”
I pulled back and looked at him like he was an idiot.
“Are you for reals right now? Because I’m the one who
proposed, remember?”
He laughed at me. “I love when you say ‘for reals’,” he
said as he kissed me softly on the mouth.
“Let’s go to bed. I really need to close my eyes,” I said.
I finished my paper the next night after school and
finally had enough time to look at Nonna’s book again. I
made it through another two years that night, but still came
up empty on information that might explain our connection.
Friday night we had plans for a double date with
