trouble.â
âGot twitchy when she found out I was sheriff.â
âHoney, youâre so handsome you make all the girls twitchy.â
âNever worked on you,â he countered.
âA lot you know. Now go away, let me run my business.â
âIâm going. Have to do my sworn duty and scold Pete Stahr over his smelly dog.â
âSheriff Todd, youâre so brave.â She batted her lashes. âWhat would we islanders do without you and your stalwart sister protecting us?â
âHa, ha. Ripleyâs due in on the noon ferry. Any sooner, Iâd stick her with dog detail.â
âIs a week up already?â Mia grimaced and went back to shelving. âOh, well, nothing good lasts forever.â
âIâm not getting in the middle of you two again. Iâd sooner deal with Peteâs dog.â
She laughed at him, but once heâd gone she looked toward the steps, thought of Nell, and wondered.
She made it a point to go upstairs late in the morning. Nell had already put out the salads and the soup, subtly shifting the mode toward the lunch crowd. The salads, Mia noted, looked fresh and appealing, and the scent of the soup was going to tempt anyone who walked into the store.
âHowâs it going?â
âFine. Weâve finally hit a little lull.â Nell wiped her hands on her apron. âBrisk business this morning. The muffins won the race, but the tarts came in a close second.â
âYouâre officially on break,â Mia told her. âIâll take care of anyone who comes in, unless they want something that requires the use of that monster machine.â
In the kitchen, Mia slid onto a stool, crossed her legs. âStop by my office after your shift. Weâll get the employment forms signed.â
âOkay. Iâve been thinking about tomorrowâs menu.â
âWeâll discuss that then, too. Why donât you get yourself a cup of coffee and relax?â
âIâm already hyped enough.â But Nell did open the fridge, removed a small bottle of water. âIâll stick with this.â
âYouâve settled into the house all right?â
âIt was easy. I canât remember ever sleeping better, or waking better. With the windows open, I can just hear the surf. Itâs like a lullaby. And did you see the sunrise this morning? Spectacular.â
âIâll take your word for it. I tend to avoid sunrise. It insists on coming so early in the day.â She held outher hand and surprised Nell into passing the bottle of water to her for a sip. âI heard you met Zack Todd.â
âDid I?â Nell immediately picked up a cloth, began buffing the stove. âOh. Sheriff Todd. Yes, he had coffee, black, and a blueberry muffin to go.â
âThereâs been a Todd on the island for centuries, and Zachariahâs one of the best of the lot. Kind,â Mia said deliberately. âCaring, and decent without being a pain in the ass about it.â
âIs he your . . .â The word âboyfriendâ just didnât seem to apply with a woman like Mia. âAre you and he involved?â
âRomantically? No.â Mia held the bottle back out to Nell. âHeâs entirely too good for me. Though I did have a mild crush on him when I was fifteen or sixteen. After all, heâs a prime specimen. You must have noticed.â
âIâm not interested in men.â
âI see. Is that what youâre running from? A man?â When Nell didnât respond, Mia slid to her feet. âWell, if and when youâre inclined to talk about it, Iâm an excellent listener, with a sympathetic ear.â
âI appreciate all youâve done for me, Mia. I just want to do my job.â
âFair enough.â The bell dinged, signaling someone had come to the counter. âNo, youâre on break,â Mia reminded her before Nell could
