unpredictable zigzags and generally getting in the way of everyone walking past.âWe have a lot of the same friends though.â
âYour friends would tell him where you are?â I shook my head. âThatâs awful, Ronnie. Do they know what happened? I mean, how he treated you?â
She shrugged. âI donât want to talk about it.â She slipped her cell phone back into her purse. âI need a coffee. Can you watch Zach for a minute?â
âUh, sure. Yeah.â I wished she wouldnât keep shutting me out.
âYou want anything?â
I shook my head. âIâm good.â
Ronnie disappeared into a Starbucks, and I kept both my eyes on Zach, which was a challenge. He moved fast. When he ran past me, I reached out and tapped his shoulder. âHey, buddy. Where are you off to?â
He gave me a smile, showing two rows of tiny pearl-white teeth. âTheo,â he said.
âHey, buddy. You said my name!â I grinned at him. He was pretty cute when he wasnât crying. âSo what do you think, Zach? Does a guy like me have a chance with someone as gorgeous as your mom?â I sounded like Han Solo. You think a guy like me and a princess like her...
âRaisins,â Zach said.
I sighed, looked under the stroller and came up empty-handed. âI donât know, kiddo. It doesnât look too good for either of us.â
Finally Ronnie returned, a coffee in one hand and a paper bag in the other. âZach, I got you a muffin.â She broke off a piece and handed it to him. âSo, guess what, Theo? Theyâre hiring at the Starbucks.â
I frowned. âYouâre looking for a job?â
âI canât,â she said. âI have Zach. But I thought you might be.â
âAt Starbucks?â I shook my head. âWasnât exactly what I had in mind.â
âRight by Universal Studios though. You might meet all kinds of movie people.â
âAll kinds of tourists, more like.â I shook my head. âI donât know, Ronnie. I didnât get the impression Joelle was up for having us stay long term.â I hadnât thought very far aheadâactually, I hadnât thought , periodâbut I probably had to go home at some point.
A road trip was one thing. A permanent move to LA was something else altogether.
Ronnieâs forehead crinkled above her sunglasses. âHer place is pretty small.â
âItâs a disaster zone,â I said bluntly.
âYeah.â She bit her bottom lip.
âI know. But Iâm broke, so...â
âSo you want me to get a job?â I pushed back a wave of anger. âIs that why you brought me along?â
âNo! I mean, I hadnât really thought everything through.â
âNo kidding,â I said. My voice came out harsher than Iâd intended. âYou just took off to LA with no money at all. Brilliant plan, Ronnie.â
âYou didnât have to come,â she flashed back. âAnyway, itâs not like you have money either.â
âYeah, but thatâs different. I donât have a kid to look after.â I looked down at Zach, who was solemnly chewing his muffin and looking up at us. âYou canât just couch-surf around Hollywood with a baby.â
âIâm not going to,â she said. âI just havenât figured out all the details yet.â
It was weirdâshe was five years older than me, and no one had ever accused me of being unusually mature, but right now I felt like I was the older one. âYou said Joelle had connections in the movie industry,â I reminded her. âYou said sheâd be able to get me a job.â
âYeah. I know.â She took her sunglasses off, and her eyes were shining with tears. âIâm sorry. Iâm messed up, Theo. All this stuff with Zachâs dad...â
I put an arm around her awkwardly. To my surprise, she leaned her head
