chest. It was driving him crazy to not talk about his dilemma, but he had made a promise to Angela not to talk to the people most important in his life. Her brother in particular. Luke was a friend, too.
He wouldn't blab. He never had before. Why would he start now?
“That figures. Women are always trouble if you ask me.”
“No arguments there.” Both men laughed.
“Can you keep a secret?” Jesse asked his passenger. Luke was his foreman and if he wanted to keep his position, he'd keep his mouth shut. Jesse wanted to spill his guts to his best friend Beau, but when the topic was about Angela, he couldn’t.
    “Yeah, what’s up?” Luke responded.
“I think I may have royally screwed up.” Jesse’s voice caught in his throat. He wasn’t sure how much he should tell Luke. Beau was just as good a friend to him as he was. “Beau and I have been friends for years, and I’ve never let a woman come between us before, but…”

    “But what?”
    “It’s Angela.”
    “No shit. His sister?”
“Yeah. She and I hooked up. It was kind of by accident. One thing led to another, and now I don’t know quite what to do.” Jesse pulled to a stop in front of a break in the fence. Something big had pushed right through the barbed wire. Rustlers could have cut the wire, but with only one missing cow, he didn’t think he should be worrying about rustlers. “Damn, the hole is bigger than I thought.”
Both men exited the vehicle and got their tools from the back of the truck to patch the fence.
Luke pointed to the tracks on the ground. “I think we have a pack of rogue wolves on our hands. Just like you thought. I’ll put a call in to the Fish and Game Department. Maybe they can do something about the pack.”
“I can only hope. At least one of my problems will be solved.”
“Ah, you’re making a bigger thing out of this Angela thing than it is. Just tell Beau you want to date her. I am sure he’d understand.”
Jesse swallowed hard. “It’s not that simple.”
“With women, nothing’s simple.” Luke laughed.
“You’re telling me!” Jesse gave an exasperated sigh. “She doesn’t want me to talk to Beau because she wants our relationship to remain a secret. I told her it was over between me and Lydia, but she doesn’t believe me. She wants to be the other woman. She thinks this is just an affair. One last fling before I tie the knot.”
“Then just straighten it out with her.” Luke began to cut away the broken wire.
“Damn if I could, I would, but I don’t think she’d be attracted to me anymore. She wants to feel the thrill of being the other woman.”
Luke shook his head in disapproval. “The truth’s got to come out sometime.”

“Yeah, I’m afraid you might be right.” Jesse wasn’t looking forward to the truth getting out. He didn’t want to have to choose between his best friend and Angela.

    * * * *

He'd spilled his guts to Luke. Now he'd had time to think about what he'd done, Jesse was pretty sure he should have kept his damned mouth shut. Yet he had never been good at keeping secrets.
On the other hand, Jesse was afraid the secret affair added to the excitement of their relationship. Angela seemed to be reveling in the fact she was the other woman. Until she was ready, he would try to keep the whole thing under wraps.
Jesse Burke had been raised to be a gentleman. He checked out the street. Empty. Good. No problem.
He slid the key into the lock, twisted it and slipped through the door. He shut and locked it.
Jesse wasn’t surprised to find the main studio empty. In fact, he’d have been shocked to find anyone there at this time of day. Regular classes didn’t start until nine in the morning. At seven
