confused. She already knew Isabel was divine. How was this supposed to help her? She tried to focus better, and little by little, the images changed and she started to see Isabel as a wolf. A dirty-brown female wolf running alone in the mountains, a male wolf abandoning her and the shame. The pain in the wolf's mind was unbearable. And finally, Marie saw Isabel's transformation and what it had cost.
“ Oh my God!” she sighed, and Gavin smiled at her with his eyes full of sorrow.
“ You see, you're the winner here.”
Marie looked at Isabel again. She felt sorry for her and somehow she was willing to forgive her bitchiness. Isabel had never asked for more than being a wolf, but no one had wanted a skinny, ugly wolf who was infertile. Isabel's gift was right there, in front of Marie's nose. The ugly she-wolf had managed to shift herself into a beautiful young woman, but that was all. All the shape shifter wolves knew her story, and that was why Tiamhaidh tolerated her touch instead of breaking her fingers. Out of pity.
Marie tried to see deeper into her mind, but a sharp pain stopped her. She turned to Gavin and reached for his mind, but it was closed from her again. She should’ve guessed. Her shoulders slumped and she turned back to Isabel, who obviously had no clue that Marie had rudely intruded into her mind. Marie smiled hesitantly and reached out to touch her gently. Isabel turned sharply. The look that she directed at Marie was so full of poison that she quickly pulled her hand back and tried to move further from her. Isabel's fingers tried to reach her face, but they weren't gentle this time. They looked like a raptor's claw, and Marie gasped in horror. Isabel didn't want her pity. She wanted to hurt her. To rip her innocent beauty away and mark her face. Isabel's face had twisted cruelly and her eyes gleamed brutally. Gavin tried to push himself between them, but it was hard. For a while the backseat was a messy knot, full of hands and faces, rough elbows and panting. Marie screamed and Isabel took it as an invitation to attack her, but just before her fingers reached Marie's smooth skin, Tiamhaidh grabbed her wrists.
He had pulled the car over and now he nearly dragged Isabel out of the car. He threw her on the bank, ignoring her screaming. The hate had disappeared from her face and she was begging for his mercy.
Tiamhaidh didn't back up an inch. “That's enough, Isabel! I don't care if the pack thinks you're pristine. You crossed the line, so start walking!” he yelled. “No way am I letting you near Marie ever again! And don't think for a second that I'll forget what you were about to do! From now on you'll be my primary prey. So if you so much as come close to me or Marie, I'll destroy you!”
“Tiamhaidh, mo gaol!” Isabel cried in pain.
    Tiamhaidh didn't turn.
Isabel crawled on the ground and whimpered, but he was as cold as ice. He knew that she was just acting. She might lick her wounded ego for a while and then she would be fine. She had tried to hurt Marie, and that was unforgivable. She would have to go to Senja on her own. And that would be easy for her. So no. Tiamhaidh didn't feel sorry for her. He marched back to the car and banged the door shut.
    “But you can't―” Marie began.
“Just watch me!” Tiamhaidh thundered. “She was going to scratch your eyes out, and no one, and I mean no one, will hurt you. Not if I can stop them!”
Marie swallowed her objection and saw Gavin silently shaking his head. Erag hadn't said a word, but now he stared at Marie in wonder.
“ Intinneach. Gu math, gu math intinneach.”
Marie couldn't understand what had just happened, but suddenly she felt all the strength flowing out of her and the mist coming back to her mind. In panic, she grabbed Tiamhaidh's hand. As Tiamhaidh had no idea how clear her mind had been, he didn't notice any change in her. Marie stared at the window and a pain beyond her imagination crushed her heart. If she didn't get
