“After one of the games. You…uh…came over, giving Karen a hard time. He was with you.”
Jerry still wore a blank expression before shrugging. “I always give Karen a hard time, don’t remember a specific one. Well, whatever, you two are walking together. My job is done.”
He walked away with Chase, who was immediately ambushed by Maddie’s eleven-year-old daughter Bree, one of the flower girls, as they headed over to Karen and Maddie, where they chatted with the wedding planner.
She turned back to Matt. “So, how are you?”
    “I’m good, thanks. You?”
“Good.”   They laughed with the awkward silence that followed neither quite knowing what to say.
“So,” he finally said. “Jerry’s getting married. Crazy.”
“Same with Karen. I never thought I’d see the day.”
“What have you been up to?” Matt asked, quickly changing the subject.
    “I moved to Chicago.”
“Chicago?” he repeated with what sounded like a hint of disappointment in his voice, which made no sense. “What’s in Chicago?”
“My job. I’m an attorney,” she added when he looked like he was going to ask.
“Oh, one of those,” Matt teased.
Shannon smiled, used to the snide remarks about her chosen profession. Standing up straighter on her heels, she was happy to see he was still taller than she was. “I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear that you and I will be walking down the aisle together. I was afraid I was going to tower over whoever it was.”
He chuckled as he checked out her shoes. “Yeah, I don’t think you need to worry about that. To be honest, I haven’t been paying much attention to the details. I’ve just been doing whatever Jerry tells me to, but I’m very glad to learn I’ll be spending most of my time with you so we can be tortured together,” he added with a small smile. He crooked his arm. “Shall we?”
She took in the warmth of his eyes before she linked her arm through his. Maybe things would be interesting after all.
“Absolutely,” she said, hoping for much, much more.

Holding a cold bottle of beer, Matt stood alone in the corner of the banquet room at the Italian restaurant Jerry and Karen had reserved after the dress rehearsal. The gathering was in full swing and he’d enjoyed visiting with everyone until prickles had started to crawl up the nape of his neck. He’d been experiencing unease more and more lately and whenever the sensation fell over him, he needed to put his back to a wall, which is how he found himself in his current position.
What a fucking mess . Resentment coursed through him as he took a swig of his beer. He should be enjoying himself, not hiding in a corner. He should be getting back out there and playing the field, not taking a hiatus. He loved women, he didn’t want to separate himself from them, but this last one had thrown him for a loop and he couldn’t help but be gun-shy. His eyes passed over the room and stopped when he spotted the tall blonde talking to her sister, laughing at something Karen had said.
Shannon. He’d been looking forward to seeing her again after agreeing to stand up for Jerry. Matt would have said yes to being his Best Man anyway, but he couldn’t deny having an ulterior motive for accepting when Jerry told him whom he’d be standing up with.
He’d never forgotten how beautiful she was. Her face so fresh and alive, her blue eyes full of laughter and intelligence, and a bright smile, quick and dazzling, that lit up everything. Matt had wanted to get to know her more after meeting her previously, but then he’d met Natalie and the rest was history. And now, here they were again, opportunity presenting itself, and he was hesitant thanks to the healthy dish of craziness being served by his ex.
Matt let his eyes travel down her lean figure showcased in the black scoop-neck cocktail dress ending mid-thigh and displaying miles of legs capped by sling-back shoes with a silver toe and heel. Shannon
