secret. I canât tell.â
âGive me a clue.â Liam tosses clothes around as he looks for the uniform Drake gave him to wear to work today.
âItâs something French.â
âBig surprise. Let me guess. A black beret.â
âNo, nothing to wear. No more questions. I donât want to give it away.â
âFrench bread, French fries, a French kiss.â
âStop it,â she says. âThough Iâd like to give you the last one. Iâve got to go in a couple of minutes. Someoneâs picking me up.â
âWhere are you going?â
âA dance. Here in Arles.â
âWho are you going with?â
âSome friends from school.â
âWhich friends?â Liam stares out the window at the bare branches.
âJacqueline and Phillippe. Bernadette and Georges. Jean-Baptiste.â
Liam goes quiet. Sounds like couples going to a dance.
âWhatâs up there?â Mackenzie asks eagerly.
âNot much.â Dizzy jumps up on the bed, but Liam pushes her off.
âDid you have a game Thursday?â
âWe beat Plainview.â Liam sits down on the rumpled sheets.
âHowâd you do?â
âTwo points. Six rebounds.â
âThatâs good.â
âI miss you, Kenz.â He hears someone talking French in the background.
âI miss you, too, Li. Iâve got to go. My rideâs here.â
âWhoâs giving you a ride?â
âJust a friend. Jean-Baptiste. Gotta go.â
Liam snaps shut the phone thatâs already dead.Jean-Baptiste is probably handsome, rich, and drives a Ferrari. Whatâs Mackenzie doing going to a dance with him? He tosses the phone on the chair. Heâs not going anyplace with other girls. He and Mackenzie didnât talk about it exactly, but he thought they had an understanding.
Jean-Baptiste. What a stupid name.
Later that afternoon, Liam straightens display models at Shoe Source at the Prairieview Mall. So many cool shoes to use his discount on. Drakeâs already shown him how to use the register, process credit cards, and remove the security tags. Liam examines his black pants, black Nikes, and black-and-white refereeâs shirt in the mirror. He pulls at the shirt. He looks dorky dressed up like a referee, but Drake insists it sells shoes.
The entrance bell rings. âYour turn, Bergie.â Drake nods at a short woman with huge sunglasses.
âCan I help you?â Liamâs zebra shirt reflects back at him.
âYes, I need new shoes for my Pilates class.â The woman makes it sound urgent.
âI didnât think you wore shoes in Pilates.â
âNo, not in class. I need the right shoes to wear to class.â She fluffs up the back of her hair.
âOver this way.â Liam leads her to the walking shoes. âAny of these would work to go to class.â
âThanks. Iâll look around.â The woman lifts her glasses to study a pair of Pumas.
âLet me know if you want to try anything on.â
Liam and Drake watch ESPN Classic on the TV above the desk. Dennis Rodman battles through two defenders to grab an offensive rebound for the Chicago Bulls. âWhatâs the deal with Rodmanâs hair?â Drake makes a face like heâs swallowed a toad.
âI think he dyed it team colors for the playoffs.â
âRed and black? Together? Weird.â
Michael Jordan misses and Rodman grabs another board. âYeah, but he sure can rebound.â Rodman sets a screen and charges to the hoop when Scottie Pippenâs bank shot rolls off. Rodman tips the rebound to himself, and the Chicago crowd goes nuts. Heâs a rebounding machine. Jordan delivers a no-look pass to Pippen, whofinishes with a left-handed jam, and Rodman pumps his fist to the fans.
The sunglasses woman waves as she leaves the store. âNothing had the right energy. Thanks anyway.â
âThanks for stopping.â Liam turns
