here, Biscuit,â Kate said. âWe wonât be long.â
Kate brought along her camera-pen, and Bailey her camera-watch. There were no ghost noises in the bright sunlight of afternoon. A neighboring door opened and Justin and Joe came out, binoculars hanging around Justinâs neck. They stopped short when they saw Bailey and Kate.
âHi, Justin. Hi, Joe,â Bailey said. âWhere you going?â
âHiking.â Justin kept his eyes to the floor.
âThat sounds like fun,â Kate said. âMaybe we can go with you sometime.â
âYeah, maybe,â Joe answered, his eyes meeting Baileyâs.
âWe donât know our way around the trails like you probably do since your grandparents are from here,â Bailey said, trying to build the boys up just in case McKenzieâs idea about them being insecure had any truth to it.
âHmmph,â Justin grunted. He pushed past them.
âWhatâs that long thing under your jacket?â Bailey asked.
âHuh? Oh this?â Justin looked flustered and pulled his jacket closed even more. âItâs just my walking stick.â
Bailey and Kate nodded as the brothers dashed to the elevator.
The girls turned to each other.
âThat was no walking stick,â Kate said. âIt was way too short.â
âAnd it looked like it was made of metal.â Bailey frowned.
âBailey!â Kateâs eyes were wide with alarm. âI think youâre right! That metal walking stick was really the end of a long gun!â
The Angry Elk
When the elevator doors closed behind Justin and Joe, Bailey and Kate went to a hallway window to see if they could spot the brothers leaving the hotel. They were about to give up when the boys came into view and walked across a grassy field into a wooded area.
âWhere do you think theyâre going?â Bailey asked.
âAnd why do they need that gun?â Kate added.
Bailey turned from the window and started back down the hall. âThose two are up to no good.â
Kate followed then stopped. âBailey, look!â She pointed to a high corner where the hall had a sudden small turn.
Baileyâs eyes followed Kateâs finger to a flat circle with tiny holes in it. âA speaker!â
âExactly!â Kate ran her hand along the wall. âAha!â
âAha what?â Bailey asked.
âWhat do you wanna bet our wire ends there? I can see a bump under the wallpaper up higher than I can reach, but then it snakes over from the corner to the speaker.â
âThey probably put it there figuring no one would look up since the hall jogs to the left here. People would have to watch where theyâre going so they donât run into the wall.â
âPerfect reasoning!â Kate high-fived Bailey. âI mean, look how they wallpapered the edges of the speaker so you barely even see it. A definite attempt to hide it.â
âIf we hear those ghost children again tonight, letâs see if the voices are coming from this speaker.â
The elevator dinged, and Mrs. Chang and Trina stepped out, arms loaded with shopping bags. âOh, Bailey! I thought you and Kate were taking Biscuit for a walk.â
âWe already did,â Kate said. âNow weâre investigating the ghost childrenâs voices we heard last night. We think we may have figured it out!â
Bailey wound her hand through the crook of her momâs arm and pulled her toward the corner speaker. âSee that flat, round thing up there?â
âYeah,â Mrs. Chang said, craning her neck.
âItâs a speaker,â Bailey whispered.
âNo!â Mrs. Chang responded dramatically.
Bailey giggled. âYes!â
âDoes that mean you wonât be spirited away after all?â Disappointment dripped from Trinaâs voice.
Bailey glared at her.
âAnyway,â she continued, turning back to her mom, âif we hear
