lucky you havenât been shut down by the EPA. You have bill collectors callingââ
â What? How did youââ
He put a finger over her lips, then had the balls to smile. âLetâs establish some ground rules here,â he said. âOne, Iâm staying until I talk to Sally. Two, I donât expect your lovely office, but I do have a business to run so Iâll need a place to hole up and work while Iâm here, with a computer, phone, and radio equipment, of course.â His eyes went steely. âAnd threeâ¦Donât underestimate me. Somethingâs going on, Mel, and I will figure out what.â
She grabbed his wrist and tried to toss his hand aside, but the man, solid as a rock, couldnât be budged, and she had to settle for a withering stare. âYouâre not staying long enough to need an office.â
âWhy, is Sally showing up today?â He cocked a brow at her silence. âTomorrow? No? Then get used to seeing this face, Mel.â
Something popped inside her head. She was fairly certain it was her brain matter coming to a boil. âI donât want you freaking everyone out.â
âI donât plan to do any such thing. I just want to talk to Sally.â
âI donât see the need for you to park yourself here, â she said. âTake your fancy plane somewhere and Iâll call you.â She spun on her heels, opening the door, but a big hand reached over her head and shut it, then held it closed.
This left her crowded up against the wood, with his body not quite brushing the back of hers, though she felt surrounded by him all the same. He was as hard as he looked, all tough muscle and bone, not an ounce of softness to him. Damn, genius, now what? She didnât know, but it was hard to think in this close proximity. She stared down at his boots, one on either side of hers.
âNo can do on the leaving thing,â he murmured, his voice like a caress up her spine, making her shiver. âNothing personal, Mel, but I donât trust you.â
âYouâre in my space.â She said this from between her teeth, caught in some inexplicable place between fury and pure, unadulterated lust.
Unbelievably, he put his mouth to the sensitive spot just beneath her ear. âYeah. But itâs such a nice space.â His breath whispered over her flesh, and just like that, rendered her stupid.
And furious. âGet out of here, Bo.â
âWhy donât you tell me just why it is you panicked when you saw the deed in my fatherâs name?â
She closed her eyes against his voice, which turned out to be a big mistake because with her eyes closed, their position felt even more intimate. âNo reason really. Just surprise.â
His exhale fanned her temple, and she heard the humorless smile in his voice. âCanât bullshit a bullshitter, darlinâ.â
She realized she was squinting her eyes. You squint your eyes when you lie . She opened them wide. âIâm not.â
âSo youâre asking me to believe Sally left you completely out of the loop on this one.â
âNo.â Mel put her forehead to the door, a very weak part of her wanting to press her bottom back snug to his crotch, which was crazy. Crazy . âYes.â
âWhich is it?â
âNo.â She had to tell him this much, he was going to find out anyway. And if she gave this freely, maybe heâd trust her enough to tell her what it was he needed with Sally. âYes, I knew the deed wasnât in the safe. No, I didnât know why. I had just hoped itâd been misplaced, thatâs all. Andâ¦â
âAndâ¦â
She let out a breath. âPeople might think the deed is still here. In Sallyâs name.â
âPeople?â
âEmployees.â
He went very still in surprise. âSo no one knows what Sally did all those years ago? For ten years you thought you
