of the rink and above.â
âAbove.â
âME should confirm that, unless Iâm full of shit. Thanks,â he addedto Roarke, took a beer. âIâm going to be surprised if general park security picks up anything. Even in New York, somebodyâs going to notice somebody else climbing up a tree with a weapon, and Iâm thinking higher anyway. Run it back, watch again.â
âI thought I saw a flash, a red . . . glimmer.â
âThe beam. Sorry,â Roarke added.
âNo, youâre right.â Lowenbaum nodded approval as he continued to watch the screen. âA laser strike emits a beam. Hard to catch it, and itâs fast. You get this to the lab, they can clean it up more, bring it up more. But there.â
Eve froze the image. âYeah, I see it. And yeah, I can just make out an angle. East and above.â
âMy guess, even if this fucker climbed the parkâs tallest tree, is tactical laser rifle.â
âWhatâs the range on one of those?â
âThatâs going to depend on the weapon, and itâs sure as hell going to depend on the shooter. But if heâs good enough, equipped right? A mile and a half, two. Even more.â
âA weapon like that? Has to be law enforcement or military. You canât just pick one up at the local 24/7. Black market, maybe, a weapons runner, but thatâs going to cost for one thatâs not a piece of shit.â
âTwenty large, easy,â Lowenbaum confirmed. âEven a licensed collectorâs going to find one hard to come byâthrough legal means.â
âA complicated process,â Roarke said, âbut doable.â
Eve turned to him. âYou have one.â
âActually, three. A Stealth-LZRââ
âYou got an LZR?â Lowenbaumâs eyes shone like Christmas morning. âFirst man-portable laser rifleâpulse action. 2021 to â23. Heavy, clunky, but a trained operator could strike a dime credit in just inside a mile.â
âTheyâve improved considerably since then. I have the Tactical-XT, such as your team would use, and a Peregrine-XLR.â
âShut up.â Lowenbaum pointed at Roarke. âYouâve got a Peregrine?â
âI do.â
âThose suckers are accurate for five miles, more in the right hands. They just released for military use last year. How did you . . .â Lowenbaum paused, took a sip of beer. âDonât ask, donât tell?â
âAll legal,â Roarke assured him. âConsiderable finagling, but Iâve all the proper paperwork.â
âMan. Iâd love to see it.â
âOf course.â
âReally?â
âWhat are the odds this shooter has something like that?â Eve began.
âIf he does, he couldâve taken the shot from goddamn Queens. Iâd really like a look.â
âYou just want to play with the toys, but fine.â
âWeâll take the elevator.â Roarke gestured.
âYou should have a look yourself,â Lowenbaum told Eve. âGet a gauge.â
âIâve seen your weapon, Lowenbaum. Iâve used a laser rifle a time or two.â
âItâs more likely your shooterâs using a tacticalâsomething in that range.â Lowenbaum stepped on the elevator with them. âThree strikes like that, in that time frame? Youâve got someone whoâs got possession and training of a long-range laser rifle.â
âLaw enforcement, militaryâor former in either. Iâll get a list of collectors to add to that.â
Eve stuck her hands in her pockets as the elevator opened outside the big secured doors of Roarkeâs weapons room.
Roarke laid his hand on the palm plate.
When the doors opened, Lowenbaum let out a sound a man might make when seeing a naked woman.
She supposed she couldnât blame him. Roarkeâs collection was ahistory of weaponry.
