his lips parting as he saw what she was doing.

“What the fuck?” she screamed. Her cheeks burst into flames of embarrassment as she pulled her hand out of her jeans and sat up. “Don’t you knock?”

His eyes hovered on the triangle of flesh revealed by the splayed denim. She glared at him, trying to channel her mortification into anger. “I have a right to privacy. Get out.”

His eyes darkened and the unwavering quality of his gaze told her more than his silence that he wasn’t listening. Her blood heated until it nearly boiled inside her and she wondered what he was thinking of—what he might be planning to do. Images of him peeling her jeans off her legs and burying those seductive lips between her thighs ran like hellions through her mind and she jerked her righteous outrage around her like a protective cloak.

“Well, what do you want?” she snapped. “Or is this just your way of telling me you can burst in and invade my personal space whenever you damn well please?”

Still he didn’t answer. Her pulse quickened as his gaze moved to her neck. He swallowed as a strange spark lit his eyes. Fear began to color the tidal wave of arousal threatening to drown her. Suddenly she wasn’t sure if his thoughts were on sex . . . or food.

    “Sorin?”

He took a step toward her, his face blank and his eyes still fixed on her neck. Her heart hammered a warning and panic spiked inside her. There were no polite words assuring her he was in control—no look of reason in his face. He watched her with the look of a lion approaching its prey—intent, determined, and very hungry.

She took a long slow breath, trying to calm herself. We have a deal. I offered him blood for protection. He’s probably just coming for a little blood, he’s not going to hurt me. There’s nothing to be afraid of. She eased up onto her knees, opening her mouth to set some ground rules for bloodletting.

He twitched and her calm shattered. She leapt off the bed, trying to dart around him toward the door. He barreled into her side, driving the breath from her body. She grunted as his weight carried them down, throwing her right hand out to catch herself as the left shot up in front of her to hold him off. The world spun and for a moment all she could do was concentrate on sucking oxygen back into her lungs. When she could breathe again, she blinked and stared at the weight pressing against her hand. Terror crystallized in her lungs as she found herself face to face with the wild eyes of a blood-crazed vampire.

Chapter 3

Gia swallowed hard as panic swelled in her chest. Sorin’s body pressed against her hand, his pectorals a solid wall under her palm. One of his hands gripped her right shoulder while the other closed like an iron band around her left wrist. Tension sang in his body as his grip tightened. If he wanted to tear her throat out, her hand on his chest wouldn’t stop him. He could snap her arm like a matchstick. Bitter fear coated her tongue and she fought to control her pulse. She had no leverage and despite her considerable strength, in this position she was no match for the vampire.

    “Don’t . . . run,” he choked.

“Okay,” she whispered, her heart threatening to explode. She took a deep slow breath. “Let’s both just calm down.”

His gaze darted to her neck and his pupils dilated. She swallowed a scream as he swayed forward, his weight pressing her back toward the floor. Every fiber of his shirt etched itself into her hand, the sound of rustling fabric crackling in her ears, screaming at her to run from the danger leaning closer and closer.

Her beast tensed inside her, the peril of the situation driving it to fight or flee. Its golden eyes flashed white in terror as it howled inside her. Her bones and muscles groaned as the wolf tried to break free—tried to escape the danger.

Pain lanced through her body as she fought the change. She would
