beats Grimthorpe House any day!â
âJust a bit,â Millie said. âHave you been to the garden yet?â
Jacinta and Sloane shook their heads.
âWeâve had a bit of a look around this floor but we didnât want to go downstairs,â Jacinta explained. âThat scary butler, Mr Langley, told us that weâd have to pay for any damages and pointed out somepriceless vase he said had been in the family for centuries. We didnât want to risk it.â
They were interrupted by another knock, but this time Alice-Miranda knew exactly where it was coming from. She ran to the bedroom door and opened it. âAunt Charlotte!â she cried. âUncle Lawrence!â
Charlotte Highton-Smith scooped her niece into her arms and peppered the girlâs face with kisses. Lawrence Ridley bent down and hugged Alice-Miranda once she was back on the ground.
âHello Millie, Jacinta, Sloane, itâs lovely to see you all.â Charlotte smiled at the girls.
âYes, good to see you all,â Lawrence said and gave a wave.
Alice-Miranda peered behind them. âWhere are the babies?â
âTheyâre in our room, being watched over by two dutiful young men,â Lawrence nodded.
âHave you got footmen babysitting for you?â Sloane asked.
Lawrence grinned. âNot quite. Your brother and Lucas volunteered their services.â
âWhoa, youâre brave,â Sloane said. âI donât think Sepâs ever looked after a baby in his life.â
âHe was doing very well for a beginner,â Lawrencesaid. âAnd as for Lucas, heâs more gaga over them than I am, which I didnât think possible.â
Jacinta almost swooned at the thought of Lucas holding a baby. âLucas will be such a wonderful father one day.â
The girls giggled.
âWhen heâs much older, of course,â Jacinta added quickly.
âWould you like to meet them?â Charlotte asked.
Alice-Miranda nodded. âYes, please. Can we all come?â
âAbsolutely,â Charlotte said. âBut youâll have to be quiet. Theyâre still sleepy.â
âJust the way I like them,â Lawrence Ridley said with a wink.
The girls followed Charlotte and Lawrence down the hallway to their room. Lawrence held open the door as the girls and Charlotte filed in. A double pram was sitting in the middle of the room with Lucas and Sep standing over it, gazing at the babies.
âHi Lucas,â Jacinta said, much more loudly than sheâd intended.
The boy turned around and pressed a finger to his lips.
Jacinta blushed. âSorry.â
The girls walked over and peered into the pram.
âTheyâre adorable,â Millie whispered.
âShe looks just like you, Alice-Miranda,â Sloane said, pointing at the baby in a white jumpsuit with a pink trim.
Sep nodded. âThatâs what we were saying. Imagine how cute it will be when sheâs a bit bigger. Youâll have your own mini-me, Alice-Miranda.â
The children huddled around the infants, mesmerised by their tiny faces with rosebud lips and creamy skin.
âI think Marcus is waking up, Aunt Charlotte,â Alice-Miranda said as the little boy stretched his arms, his face contorting.
The children watched and waited to see if heâd open his eyes but his face just went red and his eyes remained shut.
âPooh-wee!â Millie held her nose. âI think heâs done something evil.â
The other kids laughed.
âBags not changing the nappy,â Sloane said, screwing up her face.
âIâll do it,â Lucas volunteered.
âReally?â Jacinta looked at him quizzically. âYouâll change his nappy?â
The boy shrugged. âI have to learn sometime and I might as well practise on my baby brother.â
Jacinta sighed. Lucas would make an even better father than sheâd first thought.
âCome on, then.â Lawrence
