before.â
Abby chose to be obtuse. â What wasnât what you said before?â she asked, refusing to make it easy for him.
âThat Varga and his wife were having problems,â he retorted. âOkay, I admit it. I wanted to put you off him. I could see you were attracted to him, and I didnât want someone like him involved with my sister.â
Abby stared at him. âSo, what are you saying? That you told lies about him?â
âNot lies, no.â Edward was defensive. âI just exaggerated the truth a little, thatâs all. No big deal.â
Abby shook her head in disbelief. âAnd what gave you the right to interfere in my life?â
âOh, letâs not get carried away here,â protested Edward insensitively. âThe chances of you and Varga getting it together werenât exactly likely, were they? I mean, I know you were flattered when he offered to take you sightseeing and all, butyou have to understand thatâs what these guys are like. Coming on to a womanâany womanâis second nature to them, and Varga more than most. I never liked him. I hoped that when the wedding was over heâd crawl back under his stone.â He scoffed. âSome chance!â
âEdward!â
âWellâ¦â He was unrepentant. âI assumed he was just a distant relative. I had no idea heâd become such a constant presence in our lives. Do you know, heâs a major shareholder in Luisâs company? This new leisure complex theyâre hoping to open next Christmas is being financed by Varga. He and Luis are partners. Partners! How do you think that makes me feel? Iâm Luisâs son-in-law, not Alejandro.â
Abby was stunnedâas much by the fact that Edward had lied to her as by his obvious envy of the other man. She didnât know what she thought of his suspicions about Alejandro and Lauren. She would reserve judgement. But after what heâd told her, how dependable was anything he said?
She was so glad now that sheâd never confided her own feelings to Edward. Though perhaps it would have been easier if she had. Surely then he would have thought twice about involving her in his present problems. Yet, knowing Edward as she did there were no guarantees.
Feeling her way, she said cautiously, âI still donât see what youâre saying. All right. I accept thatâthat Alejandro is a regular visitor to the house. But you and Lauren donât live here. You have your own apartment, donât you? In Coconut Grove.â
Edward gave her an exasperated look. âYou donât know much about Cuban families, do you?â he snorted. âWell, let me tell you, they stick together. Like, living in each otherâs pockets, if you know what I mean? Sure, we have our own place, but Laurenâs hardly ever there. When Iâm at work sheâs more often here. Or somewhere else, if you get my drift?â
âSomewhere else?â Abby suspected she knew what he was getting at but she decided to let him go on.
âYeah.â Edward scowled. âMaking nice withâAlejandro.â
He pronounced the other manâs name just as Lauren did, and Abbyâs stomach tightened unpleasantly. âBut heâs her cousin,â she protested. âCousins donât get involved with one another in this country. I read it somewhere. Itâs considered too close a relationship.â
âTell that to my wife,â retorted Edward dourly. âIn any case, heâs not her cousin. Not exactly. Heâs a distant relation of her motherâs.â
Abby sighed. âEven soââ
âEven so, I know what Iâm talking about,â snapped Edward irritably. âI might have known you wouldnât believe me. Itâs Kenyon, isnât it? Heâs poisoned your mind against me.â
âDonât be so ridiculous!â Abby gasped. âRoss couldnât do such a
